Why to measure pH?

Proper and relatively stable water pH-value is one of the most important parameters in determining the conditions necessary for healthy fish life in aquariums and garden ponds.

  • pH value in the range of 6.0 – 8.0 is suitable for the majority of fish; however some species require more acidic water (e.g. Characidae and Ciprinidae – pH 5.0 – 6.0), while others may require more alkaline water (e.g. Cichlids from the African lake of Malawi – pH of 7.8 – 8.3).
  • Too high water pH may cause alkalosis, and too low may contribute to acidosis. No violent water pH value changes should be made in an aquarium with fish.
Aquatest pH set contains:
  • 2 bottles with indicator solvents
  • a double colour scale
  • a test tube
  • a syringe
  • manual
Easy to use:
  • add a few drops of indicator to the water sample
  • match the obtained colour with the corresponding colour scale and read the result.
How to stabilize pH?

Aquacid is used to lower water pH, while Aqualkal is used to raise it. Adjusting pH should be done slowly to avoid sudden changes in an aquarium with fish. Use a dilution of 1 in 100 (20 ml in 2 L of water). After a few hours, check the pH of the aquarium water. The amount of conditioner needed depends on many factors, mainly the water’s carbonate hardness (KH).
